2. Erg competition – I know Drexel hosts an erg competition in the winter.  Let’s challenge our old crews to come back and put up some numbers against their teammates.  I recently challenged Pat McDonnell (’91) to come back and row against me during the erg event.  This would be a great way to raise funds and bring back the old crews.  Put it out in the e-mail blast to start training now and call your old teammates to challenge them to a 1000 or 2000 meter race

Mission Statement
1.00 The mission of DRAG is to provide opportunities for alumni, parents and friends of Drexel Rowing and
to be connected with the current Men’s and Women’s team. The DRAG also provides a way in which
to recognize the contributions and volunteerism of alumni, parents and friends of the program who have
a vested interest in the future success of the program.
Goals
1.01 Get older alumni involved.
2.12 Get in touch with older alumni and invite them out to the upcoming events this fall.
1.02 Plan an event to welcome new graduates into DRAG. This could be done as a lunch for the seniors
between the Dad Vail and IRAs.
1.03 Putting together a story behind the history of the Drexel Crew Team. Dan Simmons can provide
previous roster information. Older alumni can help to fill in the blanks.
1.04 Provide more support for the 2009 Center City Slam.
Objectives
1.05 Keeping older and younger alumni in touch with one another.
1.06 Finding ways to make the banquet better.
Reminders
1.07 The focus of DRAG is more social than fund raising based. Suggested dues are an option as opposed
to requested.
News
2.09 Congratulations to Adam Alper who qualified to compete in the triathlon being held in Hawaii by placing
third in his age group in the qualifying race in the Philadelphia area.
2.13 Drexel has signed a 50 year lease with Bachelors Barge Club. They will share use of the boathouse
with Bachelors members and Conestoga High School Crew.
2.14 The IRAs will be held in Sacramento, CA this year. As well, Drexel is looking to once again complete in
the SanDiego Crew Classic. Get in touch with your old crewmates in California and prepare to support
the team when they are in town.
Committees – General
1.08 Some committee work should be run through the administration in part because they are looking to get
programs other than basketball more exposure. Also, the office of Alumni Affrairs can help with group
rates and discounts offered to Drexel.
Website Committee
1.09 Top priority is the development of a DRAG website. Richard Kopp can possibly give us a domain to
host the site. This should be done with a link from the Alumni Relations web page.
1.10 For the interim, Josh Kidd has set-up a Facebook page for DRAG where alumni can join and
communicate with one another and the group as a whole.
2.00 Check out the new website by going to http://www.drexel.edu/alumni/drag.asp Race schedules,
meeting agendas and minutes will be posted.
Travel & Social Events Committee
(Josh Kidd, Colleen Burns, Bill Camara, Meghan Holland)
1.11 Josh Kidd has been working on an alumni trip to support the team at the 2008 HOCR weekend. A
future goal would be to coordinate a Saturday night dinner with alumni and rowers. 06/30/08 Update –
Josh and Bill met with Gavin Viano. Ideas were being explored for setting up a tent for gathering and
watching the race. Gavin would speak with Richard Kopp regarding pricing options. Gavin will be in
touch with the alumni office to cover publicity for the event with the office of athletics. Initial hotel rates
found were around $180.00 per night. Josh and Bill were looking into a location where alumni could
gather for an informal Happy Hour.
2.01 Paul Savell is looking to reserve space at a restaurant for the team Saturday night. Alumni would have
a chance to eat with the team and then head to a bar afterwards. Baseball playoffs will be occurring
that night so expect crowds to be heavy.
2.02 Drexel has a tent reserved for the weekend. Although the team is only racing on Sunday, alumni are
encouraged to stop by the tent on Saturday to help Drexel’s exposure at the race. Arrangements for
food and beverages are still TBA.
2.03 Urban Saloon Kick-off after the Navy Day Regatta (10/11/08). $25 per person at the door (cash only).
Follow this link for details: http://www.drexel.edu/ia/alumrel/eventitem.asp?eventid=562
2.04 Head of the Schuylkill Regatta (10/25/08) – get ready for another pig roast hosted by Bill Camara.
Also, after the races Drexel will be hosting a boat naming celebration for the new shells.
2.05 Colleen Burns asked for any ideas on locations to hold social events during the winter and spring.
Historical Committee
(Paul Avazier & Laura Suhadolnik)
1.12 Short-term goal of gathering names and photographs. Laura also has contact information of other
alumni from her GSK boat.
2.06 Paul Avazier and Laura Suhadolnik have been working on collecting and assembling information.
Sporting Events Committee
(Dave Florio, Pat McDonnell)
1.13 Review opportunities to enter alumni boats in fall regattas.
2.07 Dave Florio to follow-up on alumni participation in the upcoming fall regattas.
1.14 Gather alumni foursomes to participate in the Drexel Golf Outings. The September outing benefits
capital improvements and the May outing benefits scholarships.
2.08 Fall golf outing is sold out. Bill Camara, Pat McDonnell and Paul Savell will be competing.
1.15 Case race.
Race Day Committee
1.16 Set-up a Drexel Rowing tent at Fall and Spring regattas.
2.10 Alan Fody remarked how other programs collect money at the beginning of the season to help pay for
food and drinks for the athletes. Dan Simmons noted that men’s lacrosse does something similar.
Paul Savell noted that providing food for the athletes and using whatever parents bring as a bonus has
been working just fine. As they say, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.
Executive Board
1.17 Until the next formal meeting is held in September, Stephen Benvenuto, Sarah Grogan, Josh Kidd and
Erin Zwier will remain as interim officers. Votes will be cast at a later date for willing candidates to
designate a President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer.
2.11 Nothing formal has been put in place as of yet. We’re still keeping it loose as it’s working for now.
It is believed that these minutes are the accurate account of the DRAG Meeting. Should anyone have any changes or clarifications,
they should contact the writer within three (3) days of receipt of these minutes, or they will stand as written.
Sincerely,
Stephen A. Benvenuto
